Chronic Pain & What You Can Do About It — Naturally
Holistic ways to avoid the easy, quick "fix" that really just causes more problems
Judging by the sales I've had for the essential oil blend Deep Blue™, it's fairly obvious that pain — even chronic pain — is a major issue in the US, if not around the world. But, the medical model for chronic pain relief never deals with the causes; it offers only quick fix options that can do far more harm than good.
While I agree that pain is a major health issue — something that must to be dealt with — and has a great impact on this country, at several different levels, it troubles me a lot that our thinking is so limited to applying a drug-based "solution", rather than finding the root cause of the pain, and applying a more holistic approach to alleviating it.
There are holistic options. They are safe and effective, and take into consideration how your body is supposed to work — looking at the actual causes of your pain — and striving to restore your body to a state of balance.
Problems with the pharmaceutical pain relief option
A natural alternative to pain medication:
An experience I had in the summer of 2005 dramatically illustrates to me the power of alternative approaches to pain management.
I was giving a presentation on aromatherapy to my local Fibromyalgia support group. I played the Ancient Secrets of Modern Life video, did a Question & Answer session and then moved on to a demonstration of the oils. One of the ladies there had actually disconnected her morphine drip to come. Her pain medications cost in the vacinity of $12,000.00 per month, and their effectiveness was marginal, at best. Worse still, these medications were dissolving her joints — which led to much more intense pain.
She came up to me, during the demonstration period, and asked to have some of the essential oils applied to her. Because she was so incredibly toxic from all her medications, I was hesitant to use the oils on her, but decided to try a single drop of Deep Blue. As I was applying it to her shoulder, her eyes widened and her mouth dropped open. She told me that the pain was gone; that the oil blend was working even better than the morphine.
One problem with pain medications is that, over time:
- They lose their effectiveness, so you need to add more and more to get the same — or almost-as-much — effect, and
- They create all sorts of side effects, such as the degeneration of joints and nerves.
Besides this, you have all the problems created by the toxic overload of your system. The more aggressively you go after pain pharmaceutically, the more you have to deal with down the road.
This is a really lousy choice.
Some root causes of pain
At its root, all pain — except that caused by a disease or neurological condition (and even then, it applies to some extent) — is caused by inflammation. Much of that is due to dietary, life-style or environmental issues. (You can read more about that in the article Pain is Big Business, in my June 2008 newsletter.) In order to beat pain, it's important to address all of these issues.
- Environmentally, besides the problem of chemical exposure, which sets up an inflammatory response within the body, a leading cause of inflammation is EMF exposure. It's really important to use some sort of shielding device to reduce this effect. What I've found to be very helpful are the products from EarthCalm.com.
- Dietarily, you need to make sure that you eat a diet very low in sugars and processed foods, and high in antioxidants and enzymes. But, since quality foods that would actually meet your needs are very hard to locate, I strongly recommend supplementation.
Simple steps to alleviate pain — naturally
There can be many causes of pain, as Dionetta noted. But, in terms of Fibromyalgia, I honestly believe that most of the pain is toxicity-based. I've found a set of nutritional supplements and essential oils that have all but eliminated my pain. Though I was in very bad shape not that long ago (there were many days I couldn't even sit up, I hurt so bad), I'm totally off medications, and am virtually pain-free.
Except . . .
Two things really get to me:
- Taking a shower, and
- Going outside during the summer, especially at night.
The issue in both of these situations are the toxins I encounter.
Chlorine (as well as fluoride) are known to create symptoms of Fibromyalgia. You absorb as much water during a shower as you do from drinking a large class of chlorineated water. Add the fluoride that we get in our water here, and you get a serious double-whammy. It's hard for me to drink enough pure water to clear my system of all the toxins I get when taking a shower. (And let's not even get started on the toxins in the soaps and shampoos we so often use . . . )
Lawn chemicals are another big issue for me. Most of these contain very neuro-toxic heavy metals. And once they're applied, they don't stay in the lawns; they rise on the humidity, cling to your skin, and can cause a whole host of problems. For me, I get the sensation of being swarmed by insects within seconds of stepping outside. If I stay out, my spine will actually torque out of alignment, often creating sciatic pain, and I get a "get the number of that truck" feeling in every cell of my body.
The essential oils help clear my system; and I've found some homeopathics that help, as well. But, this year, the toxic levels /> have been so great that the only thing that really clears things up is the EB-305 bio-cleanse unit I have.
Another cause of pain I've read about is fibrin build-up in the blood stream. It creates sluggish blood flow (eventually, heart attack and/or stroke), and has the tendancy to restrict blood flow to peripheral tissues, locking in toxins and creating a breeding for bacteria and the metabolic toxins they give off. The result can be anything from chronic fatigue to pain syndromes. Taking systemic enzymes, particularly the proteolytic enzyme nattokinase, can really help with this.
For me, another major cause of pain was the stagnation of my body's energies. I'm talking acupuncture/tai chi type energy — not fatigue. Toxicity is a major reason for this stagnation; and the stagnation helps to create a more toxic internal environment. If you're tense, have a bad attitude about life, drink tap water, eat fast/processed foods, take medications, etc — basically, if you live the modern American life-style — you probably have issues with this energy.
I've found tai chi to be a wonderful help with this, as well as essential oils.
Another thing I've notices to really have an impact are electromagnetic fields. I make it a point to always carry either a bio-compatible magnet or diode. I've even sewn a special pocket into all of my pants to hold these, and the benefits have been amazing. I have a lot less pain, have clearer thinking (most days) — I don't know what all to say about this.
Think about it: When a major weather front is moving through, how do you feel? A lot of us feel pain. It's the same basic idea: a change in the electrical energies around us. We're electrical by nature, and are affected by these energies. But our radios, TVs, microwaves, power lines, etc run on a chaotic electrical current. It's just not bio-compatible. And for those who are more sensitive, it can create a lot of obvious problems. For those who are less sensitive, it can still cause cancers and a host of other problems.
Protecting yourself with a diode and certain oils is a great place to start. Tai chi is a great addition. We need to keep the energies balanced, in harmony and moving.
I also had about a 70% drop in pain when I had my amalgam fillings removed. The mix of metals in my mouth actually created a battery effect that sent my whole nervous system into crisis.
You can read more about these things on my website: www.health-essentials.info.
The point is: Pain is a serious issue for all of us. It (along with other symptoms) has disabled most of us, and the cost is impossible to calculate.
And while pain is something that needs to be adequately addressed, I believe the medical model is terribly flawed. We need answers that actually work, and won't kill us in the process.
I'd urge you not to let your doctor off with easy answers and a prescription. If he/she can't do better than that, find another doctor — preferably one with a holistic approach to health. You deserve better than what you've been getting.
