How to Perform the RainDrop Technique, Part 1.
Preparation and Performance of Steps 1 through 4
The RainDrop Technique is really quite simple to perform. However, it's not quite so easy to adequately describe, even with illustrations. The following is only a brief description of this aromatherapy application, and is an abridged version of what is found in the Essential Oils Desk Reference. You shouldn't take this description as a complete instructional tool, but merely as an introductory look at the RainDrop Technique.
To fully understand the this powerful aromatherapy application, you should obtain a copy of the Essential Oils Desk Reference and the RainDrop Technique Video.
The Science & Application of Essential Oils Video also gives a partial demonstration of the RainDrop Technique, and includes a lot of other good information on aromatherapy applications. I highly recommended them.
Preparation for the RainDrop Technique
- Before beginning the RainDrop Technique, remove all jewelry, including watches, pendants, rings, earrings, etc. This is very important, to avoid any interference with the electrical energies of the recipient.
- To avoid doing any unlicensed acupuncture while performing the RainDrop Technique, make sure your fingernails are trimmed short. If, when you can press the tip of your finger into the skin, it leaves an impression of the nail, your nails are too long.
- Have two towels on hand to make a warm compress.
- Have a sheet or blanket to protect the modesty of the recipient.
- Apply a few drops of frankincense and/or the protective blend on your shoulders, wrists, neck and top of head to help counter any negative energy coming from the recipient.
- Have the recipient lie face down, as straight as possible, with the hips flat. The arms should rest alongside the body. (If you or the recipient prefer, you may have the recipient sit in a massage or straight-backed chair, leaning over the chair's back, as shown on the Science & Application of Essential Oils Video. It works equally as well, although it makes the procedure a little more difficult to perform.)
Step 1: Applying the energy balancing blend to balance energies

This may take 5 minutes or longer. This balancing is often felt as a kind of pulsing effect, both feet pulsing in unison, a heat exchange or a vibration.
Step 2: Dropping Oregano and Thyme along the spine and feathering them in

Do this for a total of three times.
Note: More is not better.
The essential oils of oregano and thyme are hot and very concentrated. Applying too much of these oils can cause uncomfortable burning.
The conventional thought in aromatherapy is very critical of applying these oils without dilution. However, tens of thousands of people have received this application without harm. There is, in fact, considerable added benefit to applying these oil "neat", as is done in the RainDrop Technique.
But, if a burning sensation occurs, or you see a reddening of the skin, simply apply 5-10 drops of a pure vegetable oil over the affected area. This allows the oregano and thyme to penetrate the skin — which occurs within seconds of application — yet reduces any discomfort to the recipient.
Step 3: Layering on basil, wintergreen, cypress, marjoram and peppermint oils
Holding the bottle about six inches above the skin, apply 4-6 drops each of basil, wintergreen, cypress, marjoram and peppermint oils, one at a time with the following application.
- Using the nail side of the fingertips, feather-brush along either side of the spine, from sacrum to atlas (as in Step 2) with multiple, 4-inch strokes. Do this a total of three times for each of the oils.

- Finish by flaring out over the shoulders. Repeat a total of three times for each of the oils.
- Repeat this again, using 8-inch strokes, for a total of three times for each oil.
- Repeat again, using 12-inch strokes, a total of three times for each oil.
- Using the same feather-like strokes, brush up the full length of the spine, from sacrum to atlas. Repeat a total of three times for each oil.
Step 4: Circular massage along the spine

This exerts a gentle pushing and pulling along the spine, loosening the muscles, and subtly moving the spine in the direction it needs to go.
Note: Do not apply pressure directly to the spine.
- Move to the other side of the recipient and massage on the other side of the spine; then repeat the whole step for a total of three times.
