Surviving the chemical onslaught, what's in your water, pet tips

Greetings from Lincoln, Nebraska.  I hope that you are well and prospering in this wonderful time of the year.

In case you didn't catch it: I did it again.  I totally missed the month of April.  (Seems like I did it to March, as well.)  I've been madly trying to get caught up on a million different details, and just couldn't get the time to write a newsletter.  But, I finally hired a young man to come in and do some of the grunt work for me.  He did in an afternoon what would have taken me a month to do (thanks, Isaiah); so, hopefully, I can keep up with things a little better from now on.

I hope that you will find something in this newsletter that was worth the wait.

A Young Man's Thoughts on Spring: Surviving the chemical onslaught

It is spring, when a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of … lawn chemicals.  The ubiquitous application of these toxic substances began in earnest here more than a month ago.  Linda and I took a walk one weekend back then.  We stopped, part way through, to talk with some long-time friends we met along the way; but, we had to cut it short because I started feeling swarmed by mosquitoes — although there were very few insects around.

I admit it: I'm something of a canary (and, not just because I sing).  And, that means two things:

  1. I'm highly sensitive to chemicals in the environment (due to my bout with atypical polio that left my detoxification function in shambles); and
  2. The things I'm sensitive to are not good for you, either.  You may not react as strongly as I do; but, they present a load on your system that affects your overall health.

In past years, I relied heavily on a homeopathic called Rescue 5.  It has many uses; but, for me, the property that helped the most was its ability to restore the intracellular communication that gets scrambled with exposure to toxic petrochemicals.  It essentially turns chaotic energy into organized energy, restoring the body's ability to understand what is going on inside.

But, this past year, I've discovered a few other homeopathics that have (as I've used them consistently) proven themselves to be very beneficial to me.

  1. Multi-Phenolic: This is an amazing discovery to me.  Basically, what this product does is help to desensitize you to the phenolic compounds in substances that cause allergic reactions.  If you look at the descriptions of the individual phenolics on the page, you'll get an idea of the wide range of usefulness of this homeopathic remedy.
  2. AddaStat: This homeopathic helps to detoxify your system from commonly used insecticides and/or pesticides.
  3. ChemStat: This remedy is helpful for the detoxification from various chemicals.
  4. DentaStat: Don't let the name fool you; this product is good for anyone living in the modern world.  The one thing that truly is ubiquitous in our environment is mercury; and, this product is great at helping the body eliminate this neurotoxic substance.  I highly recommend it.
  5. MetalStat: This remedy is helpful in eliminating heavy metals from the body.  Since most pesticides, herbicides and fungicides contain significant levels of heavy metals, this homeopathic can be an important part of your health regimen.

I'd heartily suggest that you check out all of the homeopathics from Energique, Inc.  I've found them to be very helpful, and I'm sure you will, as well.  They can have a truly profound effect on your health; but, they do it in a very gentle manner.  I love the essential oils, as well, and the benefit they have been to my health would impossible for me to calculate; however, in some ways, I find the detoxifying and desensitizing effects of homeopathy to be superior to those of the oils.

New low prices for Garden of Life products

Through a special arrangement with manufacturer, I'm now able to offer you the full line of Garden of Life products at a substantially lower price (just above my old wholesale price).

Most dietary supplements on the market today really aren't worth the box they come in.  Even many of the high-end supplements, backed with the latest scientific studies, are not really good for you.  This applies to many of the "natural" supplements, as well.

Why is this?

Because, most supplements — whatever their source — are compilations of nutritional isolates.  That is, each nutritional factor is isolated from its source and mixed together with other isolates, to create something of a FrankenVitamin.  These work on the body very much like a drug, pushing the body toward a specific objective; and, the body is forced to deal with it, even if it doesn't need it.  This can, too often, lead to an overload of the liver.

In contrast to this, Garden of Life products are "food form" supplements, which are, essentially "body ready".  Each nutritional factor comes with its natural co-factors, making them readily absorbed and easy on the system.  Garden of Life also uses the Poten-Zyme® process, to add nutritional value to each of its supplements.  Poten-Zyme® is essentially a pre-digestion process of fermentation.  It increases the enzyme activity in the supplements and, in some cases, actually increases the nutritional value of the product.

I've use Garden of Life products since February 2000 and, I'd have to say, they are an important reason why I was able to step beyond my disability to start this business.  The Primal Defense ULTRA and Living Multi® Optimal Men's  and Women's Formulas are truly foundational; but, the FYI products and RM-10 ULTRA formulas are also great.

A truly great Dog Food: Nature's Logic

A month or so ago, I was introduced to a new dog food.  (No; my dog is eating it … .)  Unlike all of the commercially available pet foods on the market today (with the exception of Wysong) — even the high end, natural one — this is real food for your dog.

It is a highly palatable and nutrient-dense meat-based dry food, with concentrates of select fruits and vegetables; but, containing no wheat, corn, rice, soy, potato or chemically synthesized vitamins, minerals or trace nutrients.  Each dry diet is specially coated with digestive enzymes, probiotics and animal plasma, containing high levels of natural vitamins, minerals and albumin and globulin proteins.

Following a brief adjustment period, my dog had more energy, less digestive issues and a much better coat from eating this food.  If you have a dog (or cat or horse, for that matter) that you care about, take a look at these products.  You can see them at Nature's Logic (www.natureslogic.com).

Another point about dog foods: When I picked up Xanti from the pound, since he was a large breed, I made sure to get a natural dog food formula with glucosamine and chondroitin.  What I didn't find out until years later — after the damage had progressed beyond fixing — was that this glucosamine and chondroitin was not added to the formula (as a supplement); it was just what was naturally occurring in the chicken meal used in it.  Way too low an amount to be therapeutic.  As a consequence to my ignorance, Xanti's hips just kept getting worse.  Once he was nearly crippled, I found StemEnhance™ (STEMTech HealthSciences also offers a formula specifically for dogs and horses).  This really helped and added several years to Xanti's life; but, it's hard to undo that much damage, once it's done.  So, if you have a large breed dog or horse, be sure to supplement with glucosamine and chondroitin.

Two more tips for pet owners:

While we're on the subject of pets, I'd like to share two other items for you.

I've written before about StemEnhance™, the natural adult stem cell enhancer.  This really is a great product that provides the natural compliment to antioxidants.  If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend it.

But, if you own a dog or a horse (or a horse-like dog like Xanti), especially if it is prone to spinal pain or injury, you really own it to your pet to check out StemPets®.  Using StemEnhance™ has significantly reduced my trips to my chiropractor, and I feel much better between visits, as well.

The other thing is the Equine RainDrop Therapy.  If you know anything about the RainDrop Technique, you know how helpful it is for back problems — and a host of other things.  RainDrop for your horse offers many of the same benefits, besides boosting your horse's immunity and energy levels.  If you have a horse, this is a favor you can do for both of you.

A further word about RutaVaLa: It's toxic!

A word about Gary Young's recommendations:

Sometimes, when a person tries using an oil — or protocol — as Gary suggests, the reaction can be a little strong.

Why is this?

Because Gary is, so often, working with extreme health challenges.  It is important to remember this, and understand that what works for these people may not be what a generally healthy individual needs.

I would never take the same quantities of any oil that Gary suggests for "cancer" patients or uses at the clinic; but, then again, I do not have cancer, so it would not cross my mind to do so.

As with any oil or supplement, from any company, you can always start with one drop or pill and increase, according to your need or tolerance.

* * *

Important Update: While some of what is stated above is no doubt true, experience has taught me that the strong reactions produced are, just as — if not more — often, due to the wreckless nature of how Gary Young devises his protocols.  I've found, over the years, that Gary Young and Young Living are very good at making excuses for why people react negatively to the oils or protocols, and that those excuses don't have much to do with actual facts.  This situation appears to just get worse, with the passing of the years.

dōTERRA®, on the other hand, roots its information in actual science.  I've found that their oils and their protocols are more effective, without taking such a heavy toll on the body.

In my January newsletter, I highlighted a new essential oil blend from Young Living called RutaVaLa.  That recommendation was based upon a conference call with Gary Young.  It sounded like a great oil blend, with much-needed benefits.  However, my personal experience with it — and what I've heard about it since — makes me feel somewhat less (to be charitable) enthusiastic about it.

What I have been told is that ruta, the main ingredient in this blend, has been found to be toxic in every study done on it.  Looking online, I've found a general confirmation of that fact, and that ruta has been favored by shamans in South America for many years, for its hypnotic effects.

When I first published these comments, I was contacted by the legal department at Young Living.  They asked me to offer the following comments:

Concerns about the toxicity of ruta do not tell the whole story.  As Young Living's Research & Development department looked into the research on ruta, it found both pros and cons, depending on where it looked.

After weighing the evidence, the conclusion was that there was enough credible research to substantiate its safety, when used as directed.  (See also the text-box to the right.)

However, this statement from Young Living does not tell the whole story, either.  As reported to me, by someone inside Young Living at the time, the legal team at Young Living had grave concerns about releasing ruta oil to the public.  One member of the legal team, when discussing this matter, said, "I'm not going to wear an orange jumpsuit for anyone."  But Gary Young was insistent upon releasing ruta, in some form, so they agreed to include it in a blend, to keep the concentration of ruta relatively low.

Even with this "safeguard", I feel their decision to release ruta, in the RutaVaLa blend, was a mistake.

Putting the issue of ruta's so-called toxicity into perspective.

To say that something is toxic is to make a very broad statement.  Even water can be toxic, at certain levels.  And, as I did more research online, what I found were claims of toxicity because ruta oil can cause skin irritation (that was the most common issue).  That, to me, is not a toxicity issue.  Some of the warnings about ruta's toxicity came from people who see any oil as toxic, unless it's diluted down to almost nothing.  I don't consider those warnings all that credible.

However, there were other claims that ruta oil was toxic to the liver and kidneys.  Gary Young countered that, when "ruta oil" has been found to be toxic to the liver and kidneys, it was the result of one or more of the following reasons:

This is not surprising, if you consider the complexity of any essential oil's chemistry.  With one constituent balancing the therapeutic action of another, chemical compounds that are, by themselves, quite toxic can be of no real concern, within the whole oil.  As Shirley Price said, in her book Aromatherapy for Health Professionals, there is no straight line between the therapeutic action of any one constituent and the action of the whole oil.

The truth, Young Living contends, is that there has been a significant amount of credible research done on ruta oil, and the conclusion is that it is safe to use.  It has been in use in South America (specifically, in Ecuador and Bolivia) for a long, long time.  And Gary, working with ruta oil in Ecuador, has also had some great experiences with it.

My conclusion about RutaVaLa:

In the original version of this newsletter, I said, "If you have any of this oil blend on hand, my recommendation is that you stop using it and return it to Young Living."  Although I had later retracted that statement, as based on incomplete (or outright faulty) information, I will restate my recommendation again: Do not use this oil blend.  It is dangerous.

My initial personal experience with RutaVaLa was not something I'd recommend to anyone.  I had a serious toxic reaction to it, using it as Gary Young directed on his conference call; and more than 2½ years later, I'm still not completely over it.  I've tried other products that contained ruta in the formula since then and the effect was no better (just not as intense, due to lower dosage).

And, while I followed through with my intention to get another bottle of RutaVaLa and try it out again, I could not find a dosage low enough to tolerate.  So please, if you have any of this blend on hand, use it only with the most extreme caution.

What's in Your Water

For the past several years, I've been dismayed by the fact that, every time I took a shower, I felt like I'd done at least three rounds with Mike Tyson.  Sometimes the muscle pain would last for three or more days.  I had a whole house carbon filter system to take out the chlorine; but, about five years ago, it stopped being effective.

A little of this and a little of that, and I found out why.

The municipal water was no longer being treated with chlorine; the water company had switched to chloramines — a mixture of chlorine and ammonia.  While this might be somewhat acceptable for topical application, when mixed with the hot environment of a shower, it means that you're breathing in ammonia vapors — as well as chlorine vapors and trihalomethane.

For me, this has been a terrible mix; and, it proves that fact every time I take a shower by the neurological problems I face for the next few days.

It has also been demonstrated, in more than a few studies, that your municipally-treated water contains significant amounts of over 43 (tested for) pharmaceuticals — including antidepressants, contraceptives and hormone replacement drugs.

If you can manage it, in any way, check with a water treatment company that specializes in the removal of chloramines, and get a whole house filtration system.  Just running your water through a single carbon filter tank will not work; you need more contact time with the water to get out the chloramines.  Doing this could be one of the single best things you could do for your health.

That's it for this time.  Hope something here was of benefit to you and your needs.

Best wishes to you.

Yours in better health,

Tom Anson
